Textiles are the inspiration for this collection of couture finishes, designed with attention to:
- Texture - sleek satin, raw silk, nubby linen, brushed suede
- Pattern - old world tapestries, ethnic cloth, woven ikat, lace bands, contemporary rugs
- Color - rich tweed, subtle seagrass, black velvet, red-carpet "wow", matte and reflective
- Embellishment - metallic threads, shells, sequins, glitter and gems
Unravel the secrets to creating the look of complex cloth in 3 to 4 steps - many "ready to wear" at any stage along the way - using a combination of materials, including hip classics from the FauxEffects Silver Label line (LusterStone, Sandstone, PlasterTex, SofTex, FauxTex, etc.) and fresh faces in the Gold Label line (rsTravertinO, O'Villa Sabina, rsSandstoneFlake, Stuco Lux, etc).
Students will leave this 3-day workshop with 10 designer samples to fit and flatter the size, shape and style of any interior space. The class notebook provides directions for two versions of each pattern (20 total recipes) detailing Liz and Karen's unique interpretation of each style.
Karen Kratz-Miller is the founder and artist/owner of BROAD SPECTRUM, operating in the Cincinnati, OH area since 1993. She has been involved with creative arts ever since her artist mother handed her the crayons and pointed her towards the wall. She has attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design as well as numerous workshops on faux finishing, muraling, trompe l'oeil and color theory, including all the major Faux Effects Silver and Gold product line classes.
Prior to Karen's involvement with faux finishing, she was a nationally award winning and published fiber artist. Her love of textiles as well as her graphic and fine arts studies at RISD are influences in Karen's faux finish and mural designs. Additionally, Karen's understanding of color theory and knowledge of product characteristics and interactivity, contributes extensively to her ability to create unique decorative finishes and to improvise with confidence.
Karen actively works in the field, allowing her to bring design salability, product usage and real life execution information to the classroom. Her talent has been acknowledged in the form of numerous awards for Cincinnati's and Dayton's Homearamas, Northern Kentucky's Homefest and Cincinnati and Dayton Designer Show houses. She is a member of IDAL and the Ohio Valley/Northern Kentucky Decorative Artisans Guild.

Elizabeth Designs is owned and operated by Liz Herrmann, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. Liz received a Bachelor of Arts in education from the College of Mount Saint Joseph. A love for texture, color and the creative process sparked her curiosity for decorative painting. Initially, self taught and beginning techniques adorned the homes and furniture of courageous friends and family. Liz learned quickly that many things could be altered with paint and glazes. There were no limits. In 1997, after numerous professional classes taught by leaders in the industry, Liz turned her hobby into a thriving business.
In order to remain fresh and keep abreast of current design trends and products, Liz furthered her education while working. This is a practice that she currently continues. Liz's use of color is vivid but can be customized to please the subtle, soft style many of her clients request. Outside-the-box designs include impressive textures with embedded objects, papers and jewels within the texture.
Her work can be seen in homes and businesses throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Liz has also participated in several home shows as well as taught many techniques on a professional level. She is a member of IDAL and the Ohio Valley/Northern Kentucky Decorative Artisans Guild.
