Tom Snyder-Glass Mosaics
3 Day Workshop | $795 Sale price $715.00
Cincinnati | May 19-21, 2010 | 9am-5pm

In this three day workshop designed for beginner and intermediate mosaic enthusiasts you will learn the ancient art of mosaics. For this workshop we will use (hundreds and thousands) of hand-cut glass mosaic tiles to construct your personal mosaic masterpiece. While this class focuses on glass mosaics, many of the same principles and methods apply to mosaics with other materials (porcelain, stone, pebbles, found objects, broken china, etc.).
The class concentrates on the following:
- tools and equipment needed (description and use)
- types of glass
- how to cut glass into mosaic tile shapes both geometric and abstract
- types of substrates (glass shapes such as vases, wood, backerboard, etc.)
- adhesives
- patterning
- construction techniques
- grouting and sealing
In Tom's 10 years of mosaic experience he has accumulated a vast number of tips and do's and don'ts which he will share with the class attendees.
Most of the class time is dedicated to making your mosaic masterpiece. Each student will be allowed to choose their own flat (wall art panel, serving tray, backsplash) or three dimensional project (vase). The proven benefit of the variety of art works is for students to see and learn techniques by seeing what others are doing. In many cases the project constructed has a value nearly equal to the cost of the class.

Following a 25 year as a corporate treasurer, Tom began his mosaic pursuit 10 years ago and today operates a custom glass (mosaic and fused glass) design business along with his wife Saundra (a professional watercolor artist) and three apprentices. His mosaic works are characterized by the intricacy of his design, symmetry and the precision of his work. His award winning works have appeared in numerous home and decorating magazines. He appeared on the Glass with Vicki Payne television show where he demonstrated his "swirl" mosaic technique for vases. He organized a team to construct a 30,000 tile mosaic sun burst pattern in the catering kitchen (Ty Pennington's secret room) for an Extreme Makeover Home Edition home in Logan, Utah. More recently Tom and his team constructed a 75,000 tile mosaic scene of the migrating turtles at a North Carolina beach on a 30' x 14' waterwall at a luxury apartment complex. Tom is a part time instructor at Delphi Glass company in Lansing, Michigan and has an ongoing workshop program at his design center in Pineville, North Carolina. Tom's students have come from as far away as Washington State to Maine to Mexico City to France to Australia. Two of his students, from a single mosaic workshop, won State Fair awards (Best of Show and Blue Ribbon) for the mosaic pieces created at the workshop.
